Info periorbital cellulitis in children? My 4 year old daughter and had a periorbital cellulitis three times over the last 5 months .. Her pediatrician put her on antibiotics and has never followed up ... If I take an ENT or a dermatologist? She suffers from severe allergies and has had numerous sinus infections.
Thank you
I understand your frustration, but you must understand that as a parent, you are responsible for monitoring diagnosis and treatment. Strictly speaking, this is not the jurisdiction of an ENT. An ophthalmologist would certainly help. That may be beyond the scope of his pediatrician's experience and knowledge. She should see an allergist for evaluation of his allergies. These may be the cause of sinusitis.
Periorbital cellulitis is typically around one eye and it is not surprising that it is the same every time. In his pediatrician never ordered a culture to determine if it is Staph or Strep cause it and if it is a bacteria resistant to drugs?
I think it is time to talk with your daughter's pediatrician and get a game plan.
Treatment usually includes oral antibiotics with close follow-up with your child's doctor for constant monitoring.
This is a fairly serious condition and should be treated promptly. Treatment may include:
consultation with an ophthalmologist (eye care)
Hospitalization - Your child can be admitted to hospital for intravenous antibiotics (IV) catheter. The hospital also tests close to your child and the state.
Surgery - surgical drainage of the sinuses or any abscesses of the eye is sometimes necessary.
The risk of complications can be reduced with a timely and accurate processing of the problem. Here are some of the most common complications that can occur:
meningitis (infection of the brain outside and spinal cord)
vision loss
brain abscess (with the possibility of permanent neurological deficits)
Personally, I take my baby to the hospital and request a referral hospital. Sounds like she needs to be seeing a specialist or allergist sinuses.
Good luck
