Cancer. The word alone is sure to make your heart sink. It is one of the most common diseases of our dogs, and some scientists suggest that up to 50% of our dogs will suffer from cancer at a stage of their lives.
Treating cancer in dogs involved surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, with its complications and recovery time.
A new discovery could revolutionize the treatment of cancer in dogs. Scientists in northern Queensland, Australia have isolated a chemical from fruit of a tree rainforest that is very promising in the treatment of certain tumors in dogs and horses.
The chemical, now known as the EBC-46, was discovered when scientists noticed that the rainforest animals happily eat the flesh of the fruit of a particular tree, but spat out the seeds. These seeds contain a chemical that swells their language, they do not like him. When the chemical has been isolated, it was found that caused the inflammation, and it is this characteristic that makes it useful in the treatment of cancer.
EBC-46 is given a single injection into a tumor and leads to inflammation and death of cancer cells. It also causes the body's own white blood cells to attack and kill the tumor.
There were several dogs and horses successfully treated by EBC-46, and more substantial tests veterinarians are scheduled for the first half of 2010.
Theoretically, any tumor that can be achieved by a needle is likely to be treated by EBC-46. So far, the drug was effective against tumors of the nasopharynx, malignant melanoma in the mouths of dogs and soft tissue sarcoids. The results have been noticed in a few weeks.
The beauty of this drug is that it is easy to give an animal, and it causes very little, if any, trauma or tissue damage. Until now, scientists have seen no significant side effects of using drugs.
The forest plant that is the source of EBC-46 can be rapidly grown in plantations in North Queensland, providing a renewable source of drugs.
Although there have not yet been any clinical trials of EBC-46, there is much evidence that it works. If the tests are scheduled for 2010 confirm that the drug is as effective as it seems, there will be a wonderful addition to our arsenal of weapons against cancer in our dogs.
Even more interesting is the possibility for the drug to be as effective against cancer in humans.
There are many examples of medical discoveries of the man to be beneficial for our animals. Examples are gene therapy and surgery of the hip. It's great that the search for a cure for cancer in our dogs can save your life on track.
