Organ Donor Network10 Myths About Organ Donation

Organ donation is a very sensitive subject. As we see, everything that relates to medical or mortuary, many people are in general misconceptions have heard rumors or urban legends that they hold to be true.

If you've delayed your decision to be a donor because of inaccurate information, possibly, here are answers to some common myths of organ donation and concerns.

Myths:

1. If I agree to donate my organs, the doctor or the emergency room staff will not try to save my life. They'll remove my organs as soon as possible to save someone else.

(Reality: When you go to hospital for treatment, doctors focus on saving your life - and not someone else.)

2. What if I'm not really dead when they sign my death certificate? It will be too late for me, if they have taken my organs for transplantation. I might have otherwise recovered.

(Fact: A doctor does not declare a person dead without going through the steps necessary to ensure that they are really dead.)

3. Organ donation is against my religion.

(Fact: Organ donation is consistent with the beliefs of most religions.

This includes Catholicism, Protestantism, Islam and most branches of Judaism. If you are unsure or uncomfortable with your faith's position on donation, ask a member of your clergy.)

4. Persons under eighteen years of age is too young to make that decision.

(Reality: True, in the legal sense. But the minor's parents can authorize this decision. If you are under eighteen, you can express your parents you want to donate, and your parents can give their consent knowing that is what you wanted. The children also have need of organ transplants, and they usually need organs smaller than those of an adult can provide.)

5. I want my stroke or heart wants to have open casket funerals. This can occur if organs or tissues were donated.

(Fact: Donation of organs and tissues do not bother to have open casket funerals. The donor's body is clothed for burial, so there are no visible signs of organ donation and tissue . For eye donation, an artificial eye is inserted, the lids are sealed and set in embalming, and nobody can tell the difference. For donations of bone, a rod is inserted where bone is removed. With the gift of skin, a thin layer of skin like a sunburn skin is taken from the rear of the dealer. Because the donor is clothed and lying on his back in the coffin, we see no difference .)

6. The elderly are not candidates for organ donation.

(Fact: Not true. There is no defined age limit for donating organs.

Bodies have been successfully transplanted from donors in their 70s and 80s. The decision to use your organs is based on strict medical criteria, not age. Do you disqualify prematurely. Let the doctors decide at your time of death whether your organs and tissue for transplantation are acceptable.)

7. I am in poor health or my eyesight is weak. Nobody wants my organs or tissues.

(Fact: In general, this is not true. Very few medical conditions automatically prevent you from donating organs. The decision to use an organ is based strictly on medical criteria. It is possible that some organs are not suitable for transplantation, but other organs and tissues can be beautiful. Do not automatically count the donation if it's something you want to do. Only medical professionals at the time of your death can determine whether your organs are acceptable for transplantation.)

8. I mean you can not donate to anyone, unless you are a member of the immediate family.

(Reality: Whether it's a distant family member, friend or complete s.
