Definition of ophthalmologist

An ophthalmologist is a physician who specializes in surgery and medical diagnosis and treatment of the eyes, preventing eye diseases and injuries, eye exams, therapy by prescription lenses or prescription drugs ( or both), and treatment of diseases caused by systemic diseases such as diabetes, or other causes such as aging. Ophthalmologists are involved in the search for causes and cures of eye diseases.
