Is robotics laproscopy show much better results laproscopy conventional treatment for prostate cancer? My father was diagnosed with prostate cancer and we are trying to determine what is a better method to remove the prostate. Some said robotics is better while others have said you're not guaranteed that you will get a robotic surgeon has expereinced tends to be easier for the surgeon and can use lower-skilled
I was diagnosed a little over a month from cancer of the prostate. Everything I have read and everyone I spoke with said that the method of surgery is not as important as the skill of the surgeon who performs it. Robotics has been in almost as long as open, so there are fewer people who have experience. The surgeon uses both, I chose the robotic and laparoscopic prostatectomy and about 100 a year does. This is the minimum that Dr. Walsh (see below) recommends.
So do not let the hype get to you. Talk to many people, take your time (assuming your father was diagnosed at an early stage) and find someone who knows what they do and he did much.
BTW, a big question to ask a surgeon when you talk to them about what their experience is "What are you doing differently now that you have six months to a year ago?" The pompous be offended. The competent authorities will be delighted.
Sorry to hear about your dad diagnosis. I'm sure your family is going through a difficult period right now. There is so much information on the treatment of prostate cancer that options can be overwhelming. The first thing I recommend for your father, that he get a second opinion. Open prostatectomy and robotic radical prostatectomy, laparoscopic radical are essentially the same procedure.
Radical prostatectomy is the surgical procedure by which the entire prostate is removed, and the seminal vesicles, the section of the urethra through the prostate, the ends of the vas deferens, and part of the bladder neck. After the prostate and surrounding structures are removed, the bladder is then attached to the urethra remainin. A catheter is placed through the penis into the bladder before the attachment points of the bladder to the urethra is attached. The catheter allows urine to drain while the bladder and urethra to heal together.
Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is a new procedure where there are several small abdominal incisions, as opposed to the midline incision over. The discomfort is less and recovery is faster with this approach. There is less bleeding not need blood transfusions, less
scars, less chance of infection by the laparoscopic approach. The recovery is faster because it is less traumatic for the body.
Robotic surgery is the best result with a highly skilled surgeon to perform the procedure. Because it is so complex, there is a high learning curve to master things.
The best results are associated with surgeons who have made many robotic surgeries. If your father chooses this approach to find a surgeon who has done hundreds of these surgeries, not just some.
