Volunteer Ambulance Service

A couple of guys from my first team players spoke of wanting to start a volunteer ambulance service for BLS in Arkansas. How would you do for the establishment of a volunteer ambulance? We live in a rural area with a population of perhaps 800 people, but we are still occupied by medical calls. It takes 15 minutes for an ambulance around to get out and sometimes it takes 30 minutes to one hour for an ambulance.

Check with the Arkansas EMS Commission for information about obtaining a permit ambulance. You will usually need a permit to operate an ambulance company, even a volunteer. Obviously, standards are needed, otherwise people will just throw a few supplies in the back of a pick-up and call an ambulance company:)

Will you be transporting patients, or simply wait with them until the professionals arrive? If you do not transport patients, then you fall under the guidance of a volunteer rescue squad, and it will be much easier to work on licensing / insurance / certification issues.

If you go for the transportation of patients, then you'll need an ambulance. A brand new will cost about $ 100,000, fully loaded with equipment for ALS. I'm sure it's a bit less expensive to equip the BLS. You will need to get insurance, send ambulance drivers to pilot training, and probably get all the staff (at least those riding in the back with the patient) were trained at EMT-B . You'll need to keep the ambulance stored with minimal equipment required by the state.

Sorry I did not answer, but you're right, we need this service in CA. Living so far from a hospital and prompt care is sometimes quite frightening!

The best thing to do would be to join the rescue team or the local fire department. The equipment can run hundreds of thousands of dollars, not to mention insurance. You can not offer BLS only. What about the demand for ALS?
